What Does Pathology Mean?

There are three major types of pathology which are described below:

  • Anatomical Pathology: In this type of pathology, pathologist study of anatomical features such as tissues removed from the body. They can even examine the entire body in the case of an autopsy to diagnose and increase knowledge of the disease. They also investigate the chemical properties of cells and their immunological markers. Anatomical pathology is used to identify various types of tumors and evaluating kidney and liver diseases and infections. There are further subcategories of Anatomical pathology listed below:
    • Surgical Pathology
    • Histopathology
    • Cytopathology

  • Clinical Pathology: In this types of pathology, diseases are diagnosed through analysis of bodily fluids and tissues. This field of clinical pathology is also referred to as the field of laboratory medicine. This type of pathology used to maintain the information systems and quality control. This pathology is further categorized:
    • Chemical Pathology
    • Hematology
    • Immunology

  • Molecular Pathology: This type of pathology includes the study of organs, tissues or bodily fluids at the molecular level. Molecular pathology combines the aspect of both anatomical and clinical pathology.  Molecular pathology labs are specially designed as it uses highly advanced technology focus on the disease at the submicroscopic level. Pathologists play an important role in the field of medical research, investigation and they also evaluate the effects of new drugs used and observe the behavior of different viruses and bacteria.
